Wise words: The magic you're looking for is in the work you're avoiding.

Essentialism

Essentialism is addition by subtraction. The less you do, the better you get at what you do.

Everything is a distraction, good or bad. Choosing which distractions to focus on will determine your what you're good at.

I stopped playing volleyball so I could get better at basketball.

You can't be good at everything. Keep the essentials and focus on a few things.

Boring Consistency

Create a plan and follow it every day no matter how you feel. The work you do to achieve your goals should be so consistent it becomes repetitive and boring.

Don't chase after shiny objects and novelty. Commit to one idea, one skill, and one life.

Embrace the boredom of the same and you will receive the benefits of success.

Progress From Pain

To become great at anything you need to put in long hours and sustained effort. But even with hard work, failure and pain are inevitable.

Every time you want to quit, other people in the same shoes have quit. And every time you keep going, you’re one step close to success.

Working out is painful but getting more fit is the result.

It shouldn’t be fun. It should be painful, because pain is the price you pay to improve.

Action Steps

  1. What do you want to be good at? Eliminate or limit other activities to focus on a few things.

  2. Where do you need to be consistent? Focus on doing one task and embrace the boredom of consistency.

  3. Do painful things and go outside your comfort zone. Understand that pain is the price of progress.

Until next time,

Warren
